Mohini turns her life around after her husband’s demise

Mohini’s story goes to show that there is no limit to how much one can achieve with strong determination.

Background

Mrs. Mohini Dangi lives with her mother, two daughters and her son in Bhallon Ka Guda village. The family’s ill fate started when Mohini lost her farmer husband, to a snake bite while on field. Since then, Mohini has been single handedly raising the family.

The problem

After her husband’s untimely death, Mohini struggled to make ends meet for survival of her family. Being a literate woman, she attempted to send her children to school while earning income from daily wage activities. She also did some cultivation in her five Bighas of land . Yet, with increasing household expenditure, Mohini was struggling to pay for her children’s education. At one point, the situation got so bad that Mohini’s eldest daughter Kailash was forced to quit her graduation, and a little later, her younger daughter Basanti, and her son also stopped going to school.

The turning point

Mohini became a member of Amliyaji bauji Mahila Bachat Samuh for one year. After attending regular SHG meetings and income generation training programmes organised by Sakhi and HVVS supported by RSETI-ICICI , she  gained the confidence to try her hand at entrepreneurship. The Sakhi team facilitated the group’s linkage to  Rajasthan Grameen Marudhara Bank (RMGB), Sakroda through which Mohini got access to a loan of Rs. 30,000 which she used to purchase a cow. Today, she is earning a regular Rs. 6000 per month from selling milk to the nearby Saras dairy milk collection centre in Sejob Ki Bhagal.

Looking ahead

Having found a lucrative income earning opportunity in dairy, Mohini encouraged her children to resume their education. Now Mohini is looking to purchase a second cow so that she can double her income.

“Life was hard after my husband’s demise, but Sakhi has helped me come out of my adversity and become financially independent and confident.” she says, with a sparkle in her eyes.
