Digital Sakhi: Chandrakala's Path to Financial Freedom

In the quiet village of Turkiyakala, Chittorgarh, a remarkable story unfolds—the journey of Chandrakala Khatik, a woman who transformed struggle into success. Born in 1988 into an educated family, she possessed a sharp mind and an unbreakable spirit. But at the tender age of 13, tradition dictated her path, pulling her into marriage before she could realize her dreams of becoming a teacher. Despite societal constraints, she never allowed her ambitions to fade. Now, at 36, she is not just a homemaker but a Digital Sakhi with the Manjari Foundation, a successful entrepreneur, and a symbol of resilience for rural women.

Chandrakala's life is proof that no matter how early challenges arise, determination can rewrite destiny. Chandrakala refused to accept financial dependence as her fate. With no money, no resources, and no external support, she had to start small. Around 2008, she began selling clothes in nearby villages, walking from house to house to make sales. Every rupee mattered; however, stepping out of her home was not easy. Rural society often discourages women from engaging in business activities. She faced resistance from family and community members who believed a woman's place was within the home. She endured criticism, skepticism, and moments of self-doubt. Many times, she considered quitting—but she reminded herself why she started.

Despite the struggles, she remained determined. Over time, she set up a small artificial jewelry shop at home, which provided a steadier source of income. She started earning Rs. 150-200 per day, a small but significant milestone. For 17 years, this shop became her lifeline, offering her a degree of independence she had never known before. Her earnings made a tangible difference in her family's life. She contributed to household expenses, supported her children's education, and handled medical emergencies. Most importantly, she proved that financial independence was possible for women in her village.

Her journey became a beacon of hope for other women, showing them that they, too, could take charge of their financial futures. In 2018, Chandrakala was introduced to Rajasthan Grameen Aajeevika Vikas Parishad (RGAVP). A training session sparked her interest, and she soon began conducting meetings with women, realizing the financial opportunities available. She worked there for one year, earning ₹2,250 per month. This experience built her confidence and further strengthened her desire to uplift women in her community.

In 2020, Chandrakala took a bold step that changed her financial trajectory—she enrolled in a three-day Pashu Sakhi training program. The program empowered her with skills in livestock caregiving, opening up new avenues of income. She started earning Rs. 1,500 per month, which later increased to Rs. 1,725. More importantly, she discovered an entirely new livelihood opportunity—raising and selling goats. Her home became a shelter for goats, and each year during Bakra Eid, she sells them for Rs. 30,000-50,000. Her husband joined her efforts, selling goats in Mumbai, further strengthening their financial base.

In 2024, she joined Manjari Foundation as a Digital Sakhi (a Manjari Foundation and L&T Finance initiative). The opportunity came when Manjari had just started expanding its outreach in her village, looking for capable, determined women to become community leaders in financial literacy and digital empowerment. Intrigued by the possibilities, Chandrakala decided to give the selection exam, determined to make an impact beyond her own household. Her experience as a Pashu Sakhi and entrepreneur made her a strong candidate, and she cleared the process successfully.

Now, as a Digital Sakhi with Manjari, Chandrakala earns Rs. 6,000 per month, providing a steady source of income. Her work involves educating rural women on digital transactions, spreading financial literacy, helping women access government schemes, and organizing workshops on entrepreneurship. By leading these groups, Chandrakala has not only uplifted herself but has also created a network of financially empowered women who are now independent, self-reliant, and capable of making their own financial decisions.
